The Goal Hierarchy
Vision
A single sentence. The north star. Your long-term aspiration for the product.
Company Goals
The top-level objectives the company is working towards this year. Usually 3–5. Broad but measurable.
Product Goals
Specific outcomes the product team is driving to support the Company Goals.
OKRs / Milestones
Quantified key results or milestones within a Product Goal. Each one is a concrete, measurable checkpoint.
Creating Goals
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Title | A clear, outcome-oriented name |
| Metric | What you'll measure (e.g., "Monthly Active Users") |
| Target | The number you're aiming for |
| Current value | Where you are today — update over time to track progress |
| Due date | When this goal should be achieved |
| Status | Not Started / In Progress / At Risk / Completed |
| Parent goal | Which Company or Product Goal this rolls up into |
The Goal Cascade to Features
When you link an Idea to a Goal, that link is preserved when the Idea is converted to a Feature. This means every Feature in your backlog traces back to its strategic purpose — a full chain from company vision down to individual engineering tickets.
